Name that Poem

Peter says, “the crowing of the cock, and the barking of the farmer’s dog…what comes next, Mommy?”

And I say, “And felt the damp of the river fog.”

He repeats, then asks, “What comes next?”

“That rises after the sun goes down.”

And we continue through the next stanza, until finally I say enough.

No cheating. Who can name the poem and author?

  1. Ah, good one! You stumped me so I looked it up, but I won’t give it away.

  2. Paul Revere’s Ride by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. No cheating, either.Isabelle’s memorizing the same poem!! πŸ˜‰

  3. Good job Lillian. For the record, Fritz is memorizing this poem. Peter, age 3, seems to have it stuck in his head, though. I do not make my 3 year old memorize Longfellow poems.

  4. I would never have guessed it. I was leaning towards guessing that it was Frost. Which just goes to show that I need to bone up on my American poets… πŸ™‚

  5. Whoa! I didn’t get it and Anthony memorized that poem last year. I guess it doesn’t stick like RLS, but boy, I love Longfellow. As does Peter apparently!
