I didn’t watch the debate (it just doesn’t matter), but I did think this “fact check” article was interesting.
From there, I went here. I have concluded that, no matter what their personal beliefs (left, right or in between), people who leave comments on news articles are among the stupidest people on the planet. I realize that my blunt language is not very nice, but I challenge anyone to find me a comment thread where the majority of the respondents write with correct grammar and spelling, use logic to make a point, avoid broad (erroneous) generalizations, accept that someone may disagree with them without being the embodiment of evil, and cite valid sources for their “facts.”
I don’t know which is worse: wasting my time actually looking at those comments or wasting my energy getting annoyed by them.
Wait you forgot one more: make personal attacks on other people leaving comments.>>I’m with you on the debate. TheDad is all politics, all the time. I figure that one person in this household in that mode is plenty!
Classic. I would go further in my extrapolation, however: the vast majority of the internet is composed of such people. Monkeys on keyboards, don’t you know. Or, my preferred choice, “John Gabriel’s Greater Internet Dickwad Theory.” Either way…>>There’s something about being anonymous that transforms one. I think it’s kind of the same general idea as road rage in that there’s a disconnect between the speaker and the hearer that allows both parties to forget the humanity of the other person.
Barb – yes, the personal attacks are most disgusting.>>wolfie – I agree that it’s the anonymity, and I agree it’s just about anywhere on the internet (including blogs) where people can “voice” their opinions.
I totally agree! I am continually amazed at what people say on news articles, and in fact, usually don’t read them because they are such doozies.>>(my local newspaper is particuarly bizarre in the comments left)
It’s that dangerous combination of arrogance and ignorance imbued with a healthy dose of “virtual courage.”
Totally agree here. It seems the barbarians are inside the gates!
It has angered me so much that I also wonder why I sit and read that junk. Once in a while there is something written that is noteworthy.>>I’m just about done with this election stuff … it exhausts me 😉
