Last December I reviewed a children’s book by Anthony DeStefano, Little Star. Several months ago, Mr. DeStefano sent me another of his books to read. I just pulled out the letter he sent, and I’m happy to see it doesn’t have a date on it, so I don’t know how embarrassed I should be about how long it has been sitting on my desk, waiting. I read the book right away; I just didn’t blog about it.
Unlike Little Star, The Invisible World is not a children’s book. Subtitled Understanding Angels, Demons and the Spiritual Realities That Surround Us, this book explains the Catholic Church’s teachings of God’s other creatures who were given free will. Although I do not consider myself ignorant of the world of angels and demons, Mr. DeStefano managed to keep my attention, present new information, and provide a unique perspective on topics to which I had merely given cursory thoughts. For example, although I pray daily to my guardian angel and have some very concrete examples of times he has helped me, I really had not considered that he would have a unique personality, just as we humans do.
I especially recommend this book to anyone who has little knowledge of angels and the spiritual world and who would like a reliable, Catholic resource.

This sounds interesting! I just had a conversation with my Mom this week about angels…she rembered the story of my roommate who sent her guardian angel to remind me to buy cheese at the store…while in the store I passed the cheese section, thought maybe I should get some, then wondered where that thought came from since I NEVER bought cheese. When I arrived home I found out she was in much better communication with her guardian angel than I was with mine as she asked “Did you get the cheese?”
(we were both studying theology at the time)
As a convert, it would be interesting to learn the ins & outs of Catholic theology on this subject.
Personally, I have had “someone” riding in the back seat behind me many times on my way home from teaching classes at night & once even felt “hands” on my shoulders (long story, but a potentially very dangerous situation which I managed to avoid.). I don't know if it's my guardian angel or not. Occasionally I would smell cigar smoke & would think it was Fr. De. I can't tell you how many times I stopped the car in a safe location to make sure there wasn't a human being in my car.
When I got that same feeling one morning, I was annoyed. I should have “listened” – On my way to work, I almost flipped the car (another long story). Ever since then, I pay attention – day or night.
Over the years, on & off, I've felt the devil, or one of his minions, was trying to distract me during Mass. Interesting stories there, too.

I'd love a copy!! I have definitely felt the presence of my guardian angel many times. And I know evev I don't “feel” him, there are countless times he has interceded.

I'm reading The Rite now, so I'm getting some info on demons. I'd love to learn more about actual Catholic teaching on angels as well.

Thank you so much for your advice. I appreciate it. And you are so right. I have been reading, my copy of “The Imitation of Christ” and a Kempis talks about not letting what others say or think about you bother you…but I suppose it is our human failings that have us think otherwise.

In other news, this summer my daughter and I found a book at the public library on angels written from a Catholic perspective. We were intrigued. Would love to know more.
