A Public Service Announcement

If you are moving and are looking for a company to assist you, DO NOT use Pack & Ride. My sister and her husband recently moved from Alabama to Alaska and used this company with expensive and disastrous results. The bottom line is that they were charged an additional $3500, even though both civilian and military lawyers told them the company had no legal basis to charge it. Bad communication, bad customer service, hefty extra charges. Use somebody else.

  1. Bummer. Fortunately I’m not going anywhere.

  2. Not planning on moving for a couple of years, but very good to know – thank you!

  3. From the peanut gallery – I used Upack and it was great! It worked out cheaper than renting a Uhaul and paying for gas, too.

  4. Michelle, when you moved did you pick your movers or did you have the military do it? I know it is the thing now for us to pick our movers… but I personally would rather the military do it-I have enough to worry about during a move, like who is going to be my new dentist or how in the world will my new hairdresser know how to style my hair…

  5. I’m so sorry for your sister and her family. That just stinks.

  6. Cris, we let the government handle that. And then the government paid for all the damages. If given the choice, I would much rather let them do it. I don’t need the extra stress. Besides, all your friends who could advise you have moved away!

  7. A relative of my wife’s moved to another country for a two year stay. The plan was for some of the stuff to be shipped to their new home and the rest to be placed in storage. The relative was surprised to be contacted by someone asking if she wanted the data on her computer before the disk was wiped. They found much of their stuff that was suppose to be in storage had been sold.I’ve read of several incidents about people having trouble with moving companies. For example many will start loading your stuff and then tell you there are more fees. Most people are pretty stressed and under a deadline. They’ll buckle under and pay the extra fees.
