Down for the Count

I woke up Sunday morning with a searing pain across the middle of my back. I’ve spent the majority of the last two days either moaning or hissing depending on how efficacious the Advil has been and the degree to which it has been upsetting my stomach.

I’d say I’m doing better, but it’s not even 6 am. We’ll see.

I plan to do school from the couch with an ice pack on my back.

  1. Yikes! Hope that gets better FAST.

  2. PRAYING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. hope you feel better soon! have you tried moist heat/epsom salts?

  4. Well, it’s nearly mid-day and I’m hanging in there. Walking upright, haven’t taken my second dose of Advil, so I just may hold out until later. A bit achy, but not too bad.

I have some herbal beads in a fabric bag that you can freeze or heat. I tried the heat first and got no where. The ice pack on the bag has been the most soothing.

Thank you everyone for your concern!

  5. I’m so sorry to hear this.
Don’t forget to take that advil with milk or food…if you aren’t already…it will help decrease the discomfort it causes the GI track. Time for a nice hot bath, followed by a massage. Of course when my dh is too busy (which is all the time, lol) letting the kids walk up and down my back helps too.

    Get better soon!

  6. Prayers on their way!

I second Heather’s suggestion. An epsom salts soak always help my hubby’s back feel better. Do you have any idea how you injured it?

  7. Chiropractors can do amazing things. 🙂

  8. Oh no! I had the same thing happen two weeks ago! The only way I was able to operate was with the prescription strength Motrin I had left from my last c section. After just a few days, the first question out of my 6 year old’s mouth each morning was “Is your back better, Mom?”.

Hang in there! We’ll be praying for you!

  9. Michelle, I had the exact same thing last November. Only ice would help, and when it was really bad, I could barely stand.

My doctor gave me exercises to do once it felt better, and I haven’t had any problems since…

Praying that you are 100% really soon!

  10. hope you feel better soon!

  11. OK, after the kids go to bed, I’ll take an Epsom salt bath. We have the supplies, since Bill finds them soothing after running 10 miles with no training.

How did I do it? Not sure. My best guess is doing situps as I’ve been doing every night. Or I had some really bad dreams – and pulled a muscle trying to escape bad guys. Went to bed ok, woke up in the early hours in pain.

I’m switching to Tylenol. I ca n not stand this queasiness that comes every time I take Advil, even with food.

  12. I do hope you are feeling better soon! I’ve had the same thing in years past. In my doctorly opionion, Aleve or generic equivalent (naproxen sodium) beats ibuprofen (advil) for pain relief. Both work as anti-inflammatory agents but the Aleve seems to do a better job of getting rid of pain in the short term. You can actually alternate anti-inflammatory and tylenol(or generic equivalent) as well. Praying for your recovery!

  13. I have had my back go “out” several times in the last month so I can feel your pain.

I have a friend who is an occupational therapist who taught me some stretches that helped loosen it right away and now I do them every morning and night.

Lay flat on your back with your arms straight out to the side. Pull your knees up to a comfortable angle. Keeping your feet on the ground, swing both knees as far to the right as you can and hold it for a few seconds. Return knees to upright position and then swing both to the opposite side. Repeat several times until you feel loose.

Also, laying in the same position pull one knee in as far as you can to your chest and hold. Do the same with the opposite knee alternating. Then pull both knees together and hold.

Stretching every day really has helped because once it’s injured you have a tendancy to reinjure it.

    Good luck!

  14. Thanks, Amy. I do know about the likelihood of reinjury…next trip to the store, I’ll pick up some Aleve as Denise suggested and keep it on hand.

Epsom salt bath was great – thanks everyone.

I feel much better now that I’m off Advil. I usually don’t have a problem with it, but it was definitely the cause of my upset stomach since I’ve been nausea-free all evening.

  15. Sometimes something like this is God’s way of telling us to slow down. Perhaps you really needed a few days on the couch!

I hope you feel better very soon.
