This month, I am going to look closely at how I spend my money. I’ve been mulling the Thirty Days of Nothing project that Mary over at Owlhaven just finished. I read a bit of her progress over the month and think it’s a wonderful idea – to fast from consummerism for a month, to eat simpler meals, to avoid waste.
Of course, it didn’t take me very long in contemplating my own life to come up with a half dozen things that I spend money on that I don’t really need: premium coffee is top on my list. There’s nothing wrong with buying premium coffee, if you can afford it (which I can) and if it makes a significant difference to you (oh, yes, it really does). But I suspect that there are a number of things I buy or do automatically that do not significantly affect my life. This month, I am going to look hard at where my money goes and see if there are changes that need to be made. I think, in this spirit, I will also make up Christmas shopping lists!
What’s a new month’s resolution? I’ve done this in July, August and September already. What’s your new month’s resolution?
My beloved just bought me a paint gun. My new months resolution is to get all the painting done around here…and to try freezer cooking.
Hey, I’ll look forward to reading this!>>Mary, mom to many
I avoided Target for September, and it made a very noticable difference around here. As for October’s Resolution, To hug each of my seven children every day. I know, that sounds like a no brainer, but my older kids can get away from me sometimes if I don’t pay attention. Especially my oldest, 13 year old boy. Also, I want all the kids to say good night to each other. That hasn’t happened before, because I haven’t made a point of it. But this month, we’re giving it a go. >>Thanks for the idea!
MPN: I know just what you mean about the hug-a-day. The little ones get more than their fair share of them, but every now and then I realize I haven’t hugged one of the older ones.
You know, Michelle, you have really given me a new take on the beginning of the month with this “new month’s resolution” business. This month, I am going to pray a decade of the rosary for life, and I’m going to cook at least twice a week (meaning weekdays). I’m just going to say that the cooking is a low standard, but the way the last four weeks have gone at work, it will be an improvement for my poor family!>>Thanks for this nudge to get me to improve throughout the year. I was thinking of you on the 1st, and wondering what this month’s resolution would be. 🙂
Sarah – thanks for thinking of me on the 1st! I told myself I needed to post my resolution, but I was so tired. Thankfully, blogger was working nicely and I got the Oktoberfest pictures up without a major hassle. I feel your pain trying to get dinner on the table after work – I did that for a year and a half. Do you have a crockpot? It helps.
I’m trying to get a better handle on the housecleaning this month. It’s those “out of the ordinary” chores that get to me. Either that, or I do those and neglect the day to day stuff.
Barb, did you see the link at Danielle Bean’s website about housecleaning? Looked interesting…
