All work and no play

My neighbor’s son got in big trouble the other day at school.

He was running

at recess.

He’s a kindergartener.

Yeah, I think he’s borderline hyperactive…some Ritalin will fix that up right quick.

And then they’ll complain about childhood obesity…

  1. When we lived in Florida, the children’s elementary school got rid of recess. They did take them out once or twice a day and let them walk laps around the running track. It was done in an orderly fashion–none of that dangerous running stuff. You know recess was a nasty waste of time that took away from preparing these kids for the FCAT. (I do prefer that acronym for standardized tests to the Virginia version, SOL–Standards of Learning)

  2. you know, just when i start thinking maybe T would be better off going to school so i can go back to work, someone reminds me why i really need to homeschool her. that’s ridiculous. as is making the kids walk laps in an orderly fashion. grrrr…

  3. I can’t TELL you how much I hate all that!Kids NEED recess. They need that break in their day to run it off. They need to play unstructured games with complicated titles like “Hide and Seek Freeze Tag Red Rover” and throw balls and kick balls and catch balls and shout and write on the pavement with chalk and get chalk dust all over their pants.Teachers need recess too, or their afternoons will be a living hell, day after day.Frankly, I’d like it if my high-schooler had some recess time. I’m sure he’d enjoy some time to toss a football with his friends in the middle of the day. He’d be refreshed for the afternoon ahead.

  4. Oh! And now a school district near us has taken away Gym class!! All b/c of lack of funding. Can you believe it? It was the first thing to go…Heather, I’m with you on the homeschooling….

  5. Kids need recess, and you know, I was just reminded today with some JP2 reading I’m doing that we are called to be like children to enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, ADULTS need recess. SO…let’s all take a break and go run laps in a disorganized fashion around the farmyard. Watch out for piles, although I assure you it’s all organic and washable and not poisonous (though perhaps smelly). Then let’s run in and say a Divine Mercy chaplet for this world of ours, and especially for the people who think it’s a GOOD idea to abolish recess!
