"Pre"school

Elizabeth Foss at Real Learning is doing a series on homeschool for your preschooler. I would rather my preschooler just amuse herself for 3 or 4 hours every day so I could school her older siblings, but that’s just not how it works. I need to spend as much time planning and “schooling” a preschooler as I do planning and schooling a kindergartener. Why? If I don’t, she will pester me incessantly for 3 or 4 hours every day wanting to know what work she should do, and I never will get anything done with the others.

Of Elizabeth Foss’s series, here is Part One, Part Two, Part Three and Part Four.

She promises more installments, so I will update this post as she does.

I’m in prep mode for prep mode. August is my getting ready for school month, and it takes me a few weeks to get ready to get ready. A good friend, Monica, went to a homeschool conference and placed my order for about 80% of my schoolbooks for me so I could get the free shipping. That box came last week. Bill laughed at how giggly and excited I was to open it. It’s like Chirstmas…the anticipation is almost better than the actual event.

  1. Thanks for this. I am going to be kind of “home-pre-schooling” Little Brother this year. Nothing too stressful for anyone, but there will be something going on–and this is my first time doing this. So I’ll read those articles with interest!

  2. I’m seriously thinking about starting T this September. She’s completely ready. But she’s also completely ready for toilet training and we’ve not tackled that one yet either!

  3. Both of you have a situation where the preschooler would be home with just you…some sort of structured activity for them is a good idea.Asa for potty training…bad subject right now. I’m a bit tired of mopping up puddles.

  4. Speaking of puddles…WITH YOU on the mopping up (we started that today) – Day One brings laughter, but I see how it gets a little…old…I have been discerning homeschooling Toddlertron (who is far away from needing to have the decision made), and these are great resources! 🙂 My poor priest boss…he’s going to know all about potty training AND home schooling before it’s all through (and he’s the best, totally supportive)

  5. I guess Fritz was about 2 when I started thinking about homeschooling. It took 2 years for me to think it was a <>good<> idea. There’s no one right answer for any family. Good luck with that…and with potty training. At least your 18 month old won’t say things like, “you’re a mean mommy because you won’t let me wear diapers.”
